Glasgow Biofilm Research Network

The GBRN brings together researchers from Glasgow with an interest in understanding microbial biofilms. The group primarily focused on complex polymicrobial communities and evaluating improved ways to manage these complex infections.

What's new for 2023?

We start the year by welcoming a new member of staff to the team. Dr Jontana Allkja has joined us to help with our work on complex wound biofilms. Our UKRI EPSRC project is entering its final year and we are closing in on publishing a comprehensive microbiome description of our diabetic foot ulcer cohort in collaboration with NHS Morcambe Bay Trust with the help of Prof Craig Williams.

We also say goodbye and good luck to Dr Om Alkhir Alshanta who has moved to BluTest Laboratories to work as a Biofilm Specialist.

The GBRN's group are focused on evidence based approaches to improving oral and systemic health through understanding the microbiological and immunological basis of complex biofilm infections. We have a breadth of clinical and scientific expertise from some  world leading researchers in the field of dentistry and biofilm infection.

Working with external funding partners, our mission is to improve clinical management with some innovative approaches.

Recent Peer Reviewed Manuscripts

We consistently aim to provide maximum value to our funders by publishing our data as we derive it. The following links will provide an up to date resource of Open Access papers.

PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES

Through our association with the National Biofilms Innovation Centre (NBIC) we are committed to activities to promote biofilms to all members of the public, including Schools, Glasgow Science Centre & Pint of Science. For more information see the following:

ACTIVE PROJECT THEMES
POLYMICROBIAL BIOFILM MODELS

We are actively developing in vitro polymicrobial biofilm models conceived from our understanding from microbiome studies in the oral cavity, wounds, vagina, respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. These can then be interrogated in a number of ways to test and develop new anti-biofilm actives. For more information please see our recent review.

OMICs PIPELINES

Our group are engaged in using a range of OMICs platforms to interogate mono-species and polymicrobial biofilms. RNA Seq, proteomics and metabolomics tools have been used to focus on Candida albicans interactions. For more information please see our recent review.
